So which length should you pick?

12" - Usually a formal evening look.

16" - Any time of day or occasion

18" - Good length for pendants, pearls, diamonds or birthstones. Good for day and evening wear.

20" to 24" - Excellent for both professional and casual wear

30" - Usually more dramatic look. Good for both classic or casual wear.

Formal normally means higher use of diamonds, pearls and birthstones. Casual would be less expensive stones like Onyx, or plain gold or silver chain with a pendent like a heart or something like that.
